After more spectacular failures with Patti, the charm perfectionist, I was happy to hear a gentle knock at the door. Patti pulled the door open and stepped aside to allow another young woman in. This one seemed to be the physical opposite of the immaculately groomed Patti. The new arrival was wearing a loose casual dress, her long brown hair unbound and curling. She was really rocking that Mother Earth goddess vibe.

Patti appeared frustrated that we were done and she had to stop watching me fail so vigorously. Seeing another person thrilled me. Patti gestured vaguely to the younger woman, saying only, "This is Rowan."

Rowan waved and said, "Come on, Torrin, it's my turn."

I thanked Patti and, perhaps a bit too eagerly, headed for the door. Rowan led me to her house, which she shared with a small group of young witches. They were all out working, so we could experiment there uninterrupted. The house was cozy and a little too cluttered, but it was still warm and friendly. The woodwork was old and clean, and the house smelled like herbs and magic. There was water heating on the chipped stove and nice mugs set on the table with a plate of cookies sitting in the middle. Rowan gestured toward the table and I sat, trying not to groan with my aches.

"I came to get you when Patti had gone over her time. She's amazing with some kinds of magic, but she's less amazing with people, and she doesn't know when to stop pushing and take a break," she called over her shoulder. She picked up the kettle and brought it to the table, where she set it on a trivet. "So I thought we'd take a bit of a break and talk about teas and herbs a bit before we jump into more."

I relaxed back into the hard wooden chair and stretched my stiff muscles. I had spent a lot of time hunched over a table trying to do something, anything right with charms, so sitting up felt good. The wooden chair didn't even need a pad to feel comfortable. "I appreciate the change of pace."

"That's what I thought. It can be a lot to process at first. In any case, let's talk herbs and then we'll see how you are with defensive spell work."

"Right. Herbs. Well, I like basil a lot." I joked. Really, I don't know a lot about herbs. Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme ran through my head. I had a feeling that wasn't what was on the menu for the afternoon, and I was right.
